one are the days of the map book, scrawled directions, and squinting into the distance to see the road signs. Sat Navs have also had their time, as the era of the Smartphone is now upon us.

Once a car mount was a bog standard tool, but now there are so many features and options to consider.

Is it compatible with my handset? Will the phone crash into the footwell on a bumpy ride? Cradle or magnetic? Can we wirelessly charge as we journey? Will it upset the sleek style of my dashboard?

Here are some of the best options on the market right now.

Sandmarc Active Car Mount

Sandmarc

The Sandmarc Active Car Mount is a stand-out phone holder and charger. There are cheaper options, for sure, but Sandmarc’s offering is sleek, easily used, and a great addition to your driving experience.

A copper frame and smooth curves give it a modern look and help it to blend into the dashboard. The lack of side grips is a bonus, and the California-based designers have come up with a mount that is no bulkier that the handset.

The Active Car Mount is aimed squarely at owners of iPhone 12s or newer, with magnet-enabled wireless charging limited to 7.5W and a grip on the handset which will endure a bumpy ride. The clip to attach it to the air vent or trim is also very user-friendly.

iOttie Velox Magnetic Wireless Dash and Windshield Mount

iOttie

The Velox Magnetic Charging mount from iOttie is another product aimed at top-end iPhone users and it delivers on its promises. It has a strong suction attachment to latch on to various parts of the dashboard and windscreen, making this mount – with a newly-redesigned and easy to use telescopic arm – ideal for finding the perfect spot for your handset. An air vent option is also available.

It has 7.5W charging capabilities and boasts of being MagSafe compatible, with the ability to host your handset in landscape and portrait without fear of falling. This mount comes with an in-built charging cable, which makes changing out wires impossible, but the overall look and size of the product is impressive.

SCOSCHE MagicMount Pro 2 4-in-1 Dash/Vent

SCOSCHE

Versatility is the key for the MagicMount Pro 2 4-in-1, which can be set up in different ways to meet your driving needs. The commendably small mount head is compatible with iPhone 12 models and comes with a MagicPlate so that the product is useable for phone brands beyond the Apple stable.

The mount can be dashboard-mounted with or without the swing arm attachment, and it can switch to air vent-mounted if flexibility and easy detachment is important. The MagicMount Pro 2 4-in-1 is not a charging mount, which can be a drawback, but enables the product to be more versatile and a more affordable option.

Scosche MagicMount Pro Charge5 Window/Dash

Scosche

Another one from the MagicMount stable is the Pro Charge5, which boasts charging capabilities for all Qi enabled handsets as well as the iPhone 12 and above crowd. The Pro Charge5 comes with a MagSafe plate for those that need it, ensuring a strong hold.

This is a dashboard or window mounted product, with a good sticky pad for security. The charging wire is in-built, but the car adapter comes with a handy second USB port for charging a second device while on the move. The two cable management clips are also a good inclusion for those of us who find flapping wires an irritant. A strong contender.

ZeeHow 10W Qi Wireless Charger Auto-Clamping Mount

ZeeHow

The ZeeHow Wireless mount is a lower cost option which still comes with plenty of bells and whistles to shout about. Top of that list is the automatic sensor design which grips the handset and begins the charging process. It comes in dashboard and air vent options and has 360 degrees rotation to flexibility. The mount functions well with a variety of handsets up to the iPhone 13, and there is a function to automatically stop charging once the battery is full. Great affordability rating.

iOttie Auto Sense Wireless Automatic Clamping Mount

iOttie

For ease of mind that your handset will not slip off during a bumpy ride, the iOttie Auto Sense Wireless Automatic Clamping mount is a good option on the market. Appropriate for Qi enabled phones with 10W power for Android and 7.5W for iPhones, this is a mount which has broad appeal.

Handsets are firmly secured in the cradle with an easy one-touch lock and release, and this is a product that is adaptable to a wide variety of models. The CD slot and air vent changeable attachments are also a positive.

Belkin Boost Charge Wireless Car Charger with Vent Mount

Belkin

Belkin is one of the best known brands on the market, and delivers a high quality car charger mount. It is available to Qi enabled handset owners, and comes with a usefully long 1.2 metre USB cable as well as an extra charging port – ideal for keeping the children’s iPads going on long journeys.

The cradle has an automatic opening and closing mechanism, with a single-press button release, and the mount affixes to the air vent with a solid degree of security. Cheaper than some options, and reliable.

Verdict

Sandmarc’s Active Car Mount is a top option for iPhone users. It is simple yet very effective and good-looking too. My choice is iOttie’s Auto Sense Wireless, which combines the flexibility I am looking for with application to a wide variety of devices.
